A “White” or Albinistic Doberman has a genetic fault that masks the pigment of our four normal colors. This being a
recessive gene, which,
when expressed, greatly reduces the number of pigment granules (the melanocytes) in the hair, skin and eyes. Thus the dog is given the appearance of having a light cream base coat with dead white markings. These “Albino Dobermans” always have characteristic translucent blue eyes with pink noses, eye rims and foot pads. They are TYROSINASE POSITIVE ALBINOS.
Veterinarians and geneticists have concluded that these dogs suffer from a deleterious form of partial albinism. The greatly reduced pigment in skin and eyes can and does cause marked photosensitivity (squinting or shutting of the eyes in sunlight) and an increase in the risk of solar skin damage causing and inclusive of cancer. THIS PHOTOSENSITIVITY IS A SEVERE HANDICAP FOR A WORKING BREED.
The AKC is registering dogs displaying a trait never described in the breed’s history as pure-bred. Since the
recognition of Dobermans as being a distinct breed, our standards have sought to eliminate even a small spot of white on the chest areas.
The original intent and purpose of our breed is that of a working sentry dog to obediently accompany their masters on
their appointed duties at night. White, being readily seen, thereby destroys the element of surprise and impairs the dog’s ability to do their work to the utmost.
Joric Dobermans does not support or endorse White Dobermansin any way whatsoever.
